An Introduction to Base Metal Clays in a day!
In this class you will learn all about copper and bronze clays and how they differ from silver. The day will give you the chance to make whatever you want, there is no structure to the design, you can make a chain, pendant, earrings etc. Learn to dry, attach elements, set up for firing and the firing schedules for the different clays.
Sian will walk you through tips and tricks to get great results with base metals.
This is a basic introduction to the clays, it is not for complete metal clay beginners. It will be assumed that you know what metal clay is and that you will arrive with your own basic kit ready to start making. Please do not come expecting to create a masterpiece, in the time allowed we’ll be able to go through the clays, how they handle, what they are good for and how to fire them.
FIRING:
We will not be firing on the day! Base metals need a carbon firing in a kiln, this process takes time! If you have a kiln, you are welcome to take your unfired work home and fire it yourself (you will need to bring a container to carry your work home). If you do not have a kiln or would rather leave your pieces with me to fire, I will fire and ship your work back to you polished or un-polished (to be discussed on the day).
Skill level:
Experience with metal clay needed to the level of knowing how to roll out clay, texture, cut and refine dry pieces.

Included in fee:
- Bronze and/or Copper clays (we’ll be trying a variety of brands and clays so you get a feel for each one, they vary in handling! approx. 75g of clay will be supplied per student)
- Use of textures and Hamilton Tools cutters
- Pdf with firing guide for carbon firing clays.
- The class fee includes the car parking fee for Alice Holt Forest car park.
Extra clay and cutters will be available to purchase on the day.
Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be supplied but no lunch. The Alice Holt cafe has great food and there is a fridge in the classroom kitchen for storing lunches if needed.

The address is GU10 4LS, Bucks Horn Oak, Farnham.
There is a large car park and the parking fee is covered in the class fee. You will be asked to supply your car registration ahead of the day.
On site is a large cafe selling tasty hot and cold food. In the classroom there will be an urn for hot drinks and biscuits.

Cancellations
If you cancel 4 weeks or more before the class an 80% refunded will be given (20% is non-refundable to cover admin and costs). If you cancel within 4 weeks of the class a refund will not provided. The booking can be transferred to another person of your choice but we shall not be involved in any financial agreement or transfer of payment between you and the person taking your place. In the event that you cannot attend a class and find someone to take your place please email Sian with the person’s details as far in advance of the class as possible. In the unlikely event we have to cancel a class we give a 100% refund.
In order to run, each day will need a minimum of 4 students. If any of the dates listed do not reach the minimum requirement, it may need to be cancelled and all fees will be refunded. The room maximum is 12, when all 12 places have been sold the date will show as out of stock.
