Cutter Care
Caring for your cutters is important!
These tips will help you keep them in good condition.
- CUTTERS CANNOT WITHSTAND HEAT: do not put in a dehydrator, on a hot plate, in hot water, in a dishwasher or leave in strong direct sunlight.
- The cutters are durable but not indestructable, handle them with care.
- The cutting edge is super fine (0.2mm-0.4mm) so it can get nicked or damaged easily. Store your cutters flat if possible with smaller sizes stacked inside larger ones.
- They work with metal clay, polymer clay and air dry clay. Use a ceramic tile to help the clay to not stick to the cutter.
Metal Clay: If using with metal clay you will need a good release agent or use clingfilm (plastic wrap). After rolling the clay and texturing, place the clay sheet on a ceramic tile. This will help the clay to not stick to the cutter, as it will want to stick to the tile. Be prepared for the clay to stick in the cutter and use a fine paintbrush or the supplied foam strip* to push the clay out of the cutter.
Polymer Clay: If using with polymer, place the clay on a tile and use water or cornflour (starch) to help the cutter not stick to the clay.
Air Dry Clay: If using with air dry clay, place the clay on a tile and allow the clay sheet to dry out a little before cutting. - Each order comes with an eyelash brush, this is for cleaning the cutters. The brush is soft and can get into all the tiny areas of the cutter. Use it dry to brush off dry clay or with water and a tiny bit of soap to clean release agent / oil off the cutters. Clean using warm water only.
- If the cutters get hot they will warp, which can distort the shape. If they get extremely hot the plastic will melt. There is no coming back from this!
- *A thin strip of soft foam has been supplied with link cutter orders. This is to help release metal clay from the link cutters. This foam is softer than the bristles of a brush.
- A small disposable brush has been supplied for use in getting clay out of the cutters as an alternative to the foam. Push the brush gently down the sides of the cutter to avoid making heavy marks in the clay.
CUTTERS WITH A EXTRA FINE CUTTING EDGE – Hares & some fish!
If your order includes cutters with an extra fine (straight sided) cutting edge that means the cutting edge is only 0.2mm thick to give you the finest cut possible.
These are a few extra tips to help keep your extra fine cutters in good condition.
- Be aware that the cutting edge will break easily so store the cutters with the cutting edge facing up.
- Be gentle when cleaning any excess clay out of the cutters, even if using the soft eyelash brush that has been supplied.
- Any inset design edges will be very delicate so clean those with extra care.
